Colossal Cave Adventure Game
Original Colossal Cave Adventure Game – On-line
This is an on-line version of the original 1977 “Colossal
Cave” adventure game. It was the first “interactive-fiction”
computer game in which the computer described a situation
and the player would type in what to do next.
The game is presented free on this site as a beta release to
test in a production environment. It will be moved to a new,
to be announced, site sometime in the future. We also have
plans to launch newer, more modern, games on that site.
How the game works
When you first enter the game, you will be asked for a user
name. This is for keeping track of your game. A cookie will
also be set. Your game will be good for 8 days. You may quit
playing the game at any time, turn off your computer, etc.,
when you return your game will be as you left it. If you wish
to quit the game before then you may by typing “quit” and
selecting “End Game”. Selecting “Start Over” will take you
back to the beginning of the game.
“The Colossal Cave Adventure page” is the authoritative
site for all things related to the Colossal Cave. Go
there for tips, maps, walkthroughs, etc.
An in-depth and very scholarly article on the cave, interactive fiction, and everything, can be found in the Digital Humanities Quartly.
Nice. Err, I mean, kinda crude, like all historical artifacts I guess. So far I’ve only tried it as the zcode version by Graham Nelson and that had a lot of modern enhacements, like “take all”, “n”, “x something”: there doesn’t seem to be any “examine something” or “look something”, all I get from those are “what?”. Oh, I did manage to get a description of the trees in the forest, but after that I got a “what” nevertheless…
